Friends & Family Outdoor Movie Nights (past)

i found these pix of a previous outdoor movie in the archives
this family fun filled night we watched ::

made one of the girl's fave quick & easy dinner

this night we made s'mores as we visited & waited until dark fell enough to show the movie.

then got all snuggled up with friends

& all enjoyed a cozy & peaceful wholesome night of family entertainment outdoors in good company. ahhhh summer fun. (thanks friends!)

Friends & Family Outdoor Movie Night

last night we showed another Friends & Family Outdoor Movie Night. we had plans to do them more often, but this has been a strange summer & it just hasn't been working out. we had a few first time guests last night & after much deliberation, we let them choose the movie. Kung Fu Panda...THEY CHOSE WELL!

young & not as young, were all completely entertained. i laughed out loud several times.
(jack black is always
 H I L A R I O U S !!!)
other movies we have shown outdoors are ::
  • Robots (awesome)
  • Night At The Museum (kids enjoyed it)
  • Journey To The Center Of The Earth (great)
  • Sherlock Holmes (FANTASTIC, but older crowd)

our first movie night we made s'mores, this movie everyone brought their fave toppings & we made ice cream sundaes. i swear when i sent out the invite it was 90 degrees...last night it was freezing of course.  i was being miss busy hostess & did not get many pix, but this looks pretty close. we had crushed oreos, hot fudge, dark chocolate, caramel, magic shell, nuts, sprinkles, fresh peaches, cup cakes, & whip.
 all kinds of yummies.

friends & puppy dogs socializing & settling in their spots. enjoying warm drinks :: chocolate, cider, coffee as the sunsets

as it darkens we all snuggle up in sleeping bags & warm layers

cuties!

moi , a dear friend & his sweet grandaughter

anxious friends with big smiles because the movie is minutes from starting

Friends & Family Outdoor Movie Nights are part of what are making up our sweet summer memories & hope to remain a summer tradition. we all seem to agree that movies shown outdoors on a big screen, under twinkling stars, surrounded by nature (owl & bats flying thru the night sky), in fresh air, (last night was also a full moon), in warm jammies, all snuggled in a sleeping bag, surrounded  by the blessing of dear friends is magic. especially with friends who share their  favorite ice cream toppings! (thanks friends!)

5 languages of love

i ordered this book & as soon as it arrived in the mail i took a break from my other books to read it. im so glad i did. it all started when i  happened upon this quiz. i found out my two primary love languages are quality time & physical touch. which when pointed out, i found both described me fully! the book was a very quick read.  everything was presented so simply & made so much sense. i could not put it down. i highly recommend to anyone who is married or in a long term commited relationship. you will definately learn something about yourself, your loved one, how to speak each others love languages, & how to fill each others love tank (love that one HA!)

of course then i had to order these two. can't wait to analyze & figure out each of my girlies. i definately see parenting & communicating in the way they experience love being very effective. as will loving them in the language that fills their love tank.

to find yours or your loved ones primary love languages take the quiz here. you may be amazed, affirmed, yet pleasantly suprised. one interesting point brought out in the book is that we usually show love in the ways we want someone to show love to us (do unto others!)...YET if that is not their love language it's like speaking a foreign language & they may not be experiencing it as a show of love. and besides it's just plain fun...but be careful you will be hooked & want to buy the book to find out more...like moi.

broken camera, slightly odd week & a few recipes

NOOO MY CAMERA IS BROKEN! we've been busy having a fun & slightly odd week, but no photos to prove it all. here is a little run down & some food images from i did manage to get:

* i've been cleaning & purging like a MAD woman getting ready for my big "EVERYTHING MUST GO "yard sale. every other weekend it has been 60-70 degrees, but of course this weekend it was 100 degrees. BLEH WAAAY TOO HOT! i did pretty well, but the main thing is the stuff (3 years of moving worth) is FINALLY GONE!!! then....

*we had a jolting 5.4 earthquake. enough to wake 3 up from her nap, & go to our safe spot. but by then of course it was over & we were still safe thanks the Lord. then...

* we had a traumatic event involving a baby rattlesnake on our courtyard (up by our front door) poor little guy. even though it was defending himself as he was created to do, baby rattlesnakes are the most dangerous because they cannot control their venom so it had to be removed forever. we have never seen anything shot to death so it was VERY frightening for all -God's-creature-loving us, but thank God for our helpful neighbor. for this mama though, having such a dangerous critter on my porch where my kiddies play, was equally as, if not even more frightening. it was right out the door, where little barefeet could have walked right into it, good thing the doggies encountered it first & alerted us. then....

* the next day somehow it was 90 degrees & we had a freak lightening storm...i'm talking amazingly beautiful electric streaks shooting to Earth from the heavens all of a sudden. add rain. a little summer storm, enough to make everything hot & humid. soooo then....

* we headed to our weekly beach trip the next day. we had so much fun with 8 beach loving little girls. it was way too hot to return home (our home has no heat or A/C), so we stayed in the water for 6 hrs. only came out of the cool ocean to buy ice cream cones & eat  kale/ basil pesto pasta salad for lunch. for the pasta salad i added kale to my pesto ingredients in the blender.  added it to rotelle pasta, cherry tomatoes, kalamatas, chopped broccoli,  shredded parm,  herbs from my garden & a sprinkle of red wine vinegar. YUM!

* a generous friend shared a BIG box from his garden packed with a medley of fresh produce. there were lettuces, carrots, yellow squash & different varieties of beets. i was most excited to discover the chiogga beets. i have been waiting to try them but couldn't ever find them, so i had much fun experimenting. i made a fave of mine raw kale, beet, sweet potato salad w/ lemon chili powder dressing & a new favorite roasted beet, walnut & blue cheese salad with citrus dressing. OMG!!! (directions below) even better when you share with neighbors at an impromtu lunch. also...

* PET SITTING:: also did a ton of pet sitting jobs. Q :: what do you get when you pet sit chickens? A :: tons of fresh eggs to bake cupcakes for a little sister who turned 5 & other goodies.

chiogga beets, aren't they pretty

roasted beet, blue cheese & walnut salad  w/ citrus dressing (directions below)

fresh eggs the girls earned petsitting. can't wait to make them into goodies

:: ROASTED BEET, WALNUT & BLUE CHEESE SALAD W/ CITRUS DRESSING ::

  • preheat oven to 350 degrees F

  • clean, trim & slice @ 6 beets (i mixed varieties) place in baking pan along with sliced onions

  • drizzle with olive, sprinkle with s&p

  • bake for @ 1 hour until they are fork tender

  • set aside to cool

:: CITRUS DRESSING ::

  • in a sauce pan on medium heat reduce 3 cups of blood orange juice (any orange will work), then add @ 1/2 cups of lemon juice & s&p.

  •  i added a dash of balsamic vinegar to taste, but that's optional.

  • after the juices cook together add @ 6 cloves, 6 allspice berries, 1/4 tsp of anise seeds (these spices are optional, but deepen the flavor).

  • last add 3/4 cup of olive oil

  • set aside to cool
to assemble the salad mix all of the above on a bed of greens, sprinkle with blue cheese & walnut, & enjoy!

:: RAW LACINATO KALE, SWEET POTATO & BEET SALAD ::

this is one of my fave salads! sounds weird, no one believes me, but everyone loves it after trying it. the beets & sweet potatoes sweeten after they marinate for about an hour.

  • shred or finely chop 1/2 bunch kale (ribbons of dark lacinato are my choice), 1 large sweet potatoes & 2 beets. (can experiment with other veggies or fruit ex: carrots) & combine in a bowl

  • in a separate bowl combine @ 1/2 cup of olive oil, 1/2 cup lemon juice, 1 Tbsp of chili powder, s&p (all of these ingredients to your taste)

  • mix spices together then pour over veggies

  • let marinate for at least an hour

  • i also like to sprinkle seeds or nuts on top

  • this recipe makes enough for @ 4 small side portions
HAVE FUN EXPERIMENTING FRIENDS!

homemade cheese danishes with icing

:: mama's kitchen ::
homemade cheese danishes with icing (OMG!!!)

ok so i found this recipe at lifeingrace. ANYTHING with cream cheese & vanilla is His thing. He could barely wait until i brought all the ingredients home, then he baked it right up! we are so hooked! very few ingredients, so quick & easy. this will be my go to recipe from now on. we ate it warm yesterday & cooled today...either way is FAB! though i do prefer warmed. the only difference is His doubled the vanilla & next time i will add a little lemon juice to brighten the flavor.  the icing is 1 cup of confectioners sugar, @ 2 T butter, & @ 2 T of milk depending on the consistency.

yup...like seriously. now your turn!

* oooooh our new popscicle molds just arrived. we bought all the ingredients, but have been waiting & waiting...because it has only been 60 degrees these last few weeks. this week is supposed to be in the 90's...just in time!  cant wait to experiment with frozen berries & yogurt recipes.
